Soldier sacrifices his life to save Dad’s life – Dad names his newborn after him in honor

For one Polish lieutenant who spent time in Afghanistan, life was changed forever by a Staten Island-born soldier and his family forever.

24-year-old Michael Ollis of the 2nd Battalion, 22nd Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (Light) out of Fort Drum, was working with a group of Polish soldiers during his time out in Afghanistan.

On August 28, 2013, their base was attacked by Al Qaeda, and ten suicide bombers breached their post; while nine were stopped, the tenth came out of hiding and proceeded to charge at Polish soldier Lt. Karol Cierpica. When Ollis saw this, he heroically stepped in between the two to protect Cierpica, and lost his own life to save a fellow soldier.

Cierpica has never forgotten the sacrifice Ollis made for him, so when the Ollis family came to accept the Army Gold Medal from Poland on his behalf, Lt. Karol and his pregnant wife Basha were there to thank and appreciate everything they had done for him.
